Big Picture Thinking on Housing

The whole area of housing needs a fresh approach, with consideration for society as a whole instead of solving specific problems with blinkers on.  We need to look at multifaceted solutions to housing needs with consideration for affordability, accessibility and the different intergenerational needs. In Ireland, we keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

One such solution is the concept of integrated living where single developments offer a more rounded solution than just “more houses”. These innovative developments are increasingly popular in Europe because they make sense.

These developments can include:

  • Eco-friendly buildings
  • Mixed-tenure housing (social, affordable etc.)
  • Intergenerational housing solutions
  • Elderly and all-ability access
  • Creches
  • Medical clinics

There are plenty of examples of this in Europe including Nordhavn in Copenhagen and Cascina Merlata in Milan. This is the kind of big picture housing solution that is friendly to the environment, has essential services on the doorstep, reduces isolation for elderly people and makes housing affordable for young people starting out.

In order to satisty ambitious thinking in terms of housing, we need to ensure we that have the underlying infrastructure (water supply and water treatment, road network etc.) instead of plastering over the cracks by just adding more housing stock to the market that is not fit for purpose for an expanding and changing society. What many people don’t realise in the West of Ireland is that waste water is currently being transported by trucks and the sewage system is in “urgent” need of repair to “avoid total failure”

Until the waste water infrastructure in the West of Ireland is radically overhauled, any talk of substantial new housing stock in the west is nothing more than talk.
